Lead Yourself Well ~ Be Disciplined in Reflection

February 06, 2026•2 min read

Leadership moves fast.

Days fill quickly with decisions, conversations, and responsibilities, and if we’re not careful, we drift from activity to activity without ever pausing to reflect.

Yet reflection is not a luxury for leaders; it is a discipline.

Scripture reminds us,

Be very careful, then, how you live; not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:15–16).

Wise leadership doesn’t just look forward; it looks inward.

It creates space to ask honest questions: What am I learning? How am I showing up? Who am I becoming as I lead?

One lesson I’m holding onto is this: I may not be a great leader yet, but I am becoming a better one.

➡️ Growth matters more than arrival.

Paul urged Timothy, “Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress” (1 Timothy 4:15).

Progress, not perfection, is the mark of a leader who is serious about growth.

➡️ Another lesson is the responsibility to be understood.

Leadership is not simply about vision or direction; it’s about relationships. When people don’t understand us, they struggle to trust us.

Andy Stanley captures this well: “People will follow you more closely when they understand you more fully.” Self-awareness and clarity are acts of service to those we lead.

➡️ I’m also learning the discipline of getting out of the way.

Healthy leadership creates room for others to begin, to grow, and to take ownership. John the Baptist modelled this posture when he said, “He must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30).

Leaders who refuse to step aside will eventually limit the growth of their teams.

Perhaps the most sobering lesson is this: permission to lead is never permanent. It must be continually earned. Influence grows when humility, consistency, and care are practised daily.

That’s why teachability matters.

A leader who stops learning soon stops leading.

➡️ Reflection keeps our hearts soft, our posture humble, and our leadership healthy.

Lead yourself well because the depth of your leadership will always be shaped by the depth of your willingness to reflect.
